Can KBH win the Primary?

We all knew it would happen, Sen. Kay Bailey is setting up to run for Governor in 2010. She said in an interview that she is not going to seek re-election to the US Senate and perhaps will leave office before her term expires in 2012. "Is it better for Texas for me to leave early and give someone else a chance to start building seniority before the class of 2013? I think it probably is," Hutchison said. Adding "It's too early to be gearing up [for a run for Governor]? I don't want to peak in 2007 for a 2010 race. Would I like to do it? Yes. A lot of things have to happen to make it a reality. You can't plan that far ahead with certainty."

The question is, will she even win the Republican Nomination for Governor? That's a big if. It's widely known that several Republicans are eyeing the Governor's Mansion.

The lists includes:
- Lt. Governor David Dewhurst: He has the personal fortune to finance the campaign. He is also a someone that could be in line to a shot at the Senate seat KBH is leaving.
- AG Greg Abbott: Very well liked across the state and a rising star in the GOP ranks.
- Former Sec. of State Roger Williams: A long time GOP fundraiser who played a big part in the financing of George W Bush's campaigns. He recently resigned as SOS for a run for Governor.
- Comptroller Susan Combs: In her first term as Comptroller, replacing Carole Keeton Strayhorn who lost in 2006 to Rick Perry, Combs is also a GOP rising star in Texas and well liked by the Woman's clubs in Texas.

and don't forget Rick Perry. There are no term limits in Texas so he could conceivably run again. However, his popularity is not that high right now amongst conservatives...especially if you read the reactions from
Matt Lewis of Townhall.com recent blog on a Perry VP about Perry as a potential VP for Rudy G.

The only battles fought in Texas now are in the primaries, and Sen. Hutchison didn't fight it in 2006...instead it appears to run in 2010. Could shape up to be even worse than the last rodeo.

UPDATE: Rick Pery has
endorsed Rudy Giuliani, raising speculation that he is vying for the VP slot.

Could She Fill the Vacuum

There is a tremendous amount of voter fatigue amongst GOP primary voters, witness the hope that Fred Thompson was going to come in and immediately fill the "conservative" vacuum that appears to be out there.

Here's another name to keep in mind, Lynne Cheney. She has a very impressive resume for anyone who would consider running for President. She has a PhD with a specialization in 19th-Century British literature from the University of Wisconsin, is a best-selling author, was a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institude, and was named chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts by President Reagan. Ms. Cheney has experience in front of a camera as one of the co-hosts of CNN's Crossfire.

While this is a shot in the dark, could Lynne Cheney fill that vacuum conservatives seem to have right now? Who wouldn't love to see her battle Hillary after how well she smacked down Wolf Blitzer.

UPDATE: Just days after I wrote this article, Kathyrn Jean Lopez posted a column on Townhall.com. Read it here.
